"Selling federal lands increases rural tax bases and allows ranchers, timber companies or developers to use the properties that otherwise would be off limits, said Will Adams, a spokesman for U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.... The point is much of the land in the West is owned by the federal government," Adams said. "Any attempt to reduce our federal land from our massive landholdings in the West we'd be behind." Reno Gazette Journal, 02/22/06

"Of the 192 million acres in the National Forest Service system, more than 70 million remain at risk from catastrophic wildfire. In fact, the General Accounting Office reported that one in three acres in the national forests are either dead or dying. That means more dry tinder that turns smaller, healthy fires into raging wildfires that foul our water, pollute our air, and destroy homes. The "no management is good management" philosophy has giving us forests that are home to rapidly spreading disease, unchecked insect epidemics, and unnaturally high levels of dry fuel accumulation. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that this kind of insistence on inaction is a recipe for the kind of disaster with which many of us in Colorado are now all too familiar." - Date Unknown
